My Views and Experiences
Dance is a great way to communicate feelings, as every level of movement either big or small suggests a different meaning to the audience. Students might use strong movements to make a statement about a particular issue leading to the audience to reflect and think. I have had a lot experience with dance ranging from school musicals to just dancing around the house. However, with certain dances people like to follow choreography by I feel that students should develop their own interpretation of the music as following someone doesn't gives opportunities for you to express your inner self. Upon entering a classroom I need to ensure students are comfortable to take risks with dance and not just follow the person beside them. If we all followed the same movements their would be no room for creativity or self-expression. Dance gives the capacity for students to be inspired and engage
students minds, for them to be imaginative and innovative thinkers (ACARA, 2013).
Incorporating into the classroom
Through using the elements of dance our role as a teacher is to promote well being and social inclusion enabling all students to feel comfortable enough to express their feelings and emotions through dance without feeling exposed or afraid. Dance is an art form that encourages students to feel comfortable with their body (Gibson & Ewing, 2011). Students can experience a range of different cultures and backgrounds through use of dance, they're able to gain knowledge of the diverse purposes, traditions, histories and cultures of dance ( ACARA, 2013).
In the tutorial we were asked to make a 2 min dance interpretation of a certain movement, for instance in my group we thought of creating movements to represent a lifecycle of the flower, going through the stages of birth and death. This activities enable us to communicate an idea for the audience to reflect upon. This was a great way to incorporate all elements of dance, another activity could be to play music for students to interpret a movement from sounds and beats. Students can incorporate everyones movement to create a dance from the music. This dance could be present to family and friends for them to reflect upon.
