Previous Personal Statement
I believe that creativity is “thinking outside the box”, its so open ended as there is no write or wrong to expressing your own creativity. Creativity provides people a chance to explore uncharted discovery and to create new experiences for themselves. Instead of using rote learning by filling students heads with knowledge, creative learning gives them a chance to imagine and express their feelings and emotions through the arts. Students often believe that creativity its just through the arts, but creativity is in whatever domain he or she is working (Piirto, 2011). Creativity provides students a chance to elaborate and evaluate their own ideas and reflect on what they could do to improve (Piirto, 2011). When in a group situation children can communicate ideas with other classmates, making them all open to new perspectives incorporating all ideas and inputs (Piirto, 2011). In society creativity is a positive word to push us to innovative work and to aspire progress (Attali, 2009). To encourage creativity in the classroom pre –service teachers like myself, need to explore our own creative process before using creative pedagogies in the classroom. “You can’t teach students to be creative unless you have tried out your own creative impulses” (Piirto, 2011, p. 8).
Revised Personal Statement
Creativity is not only 'thinking outside the box', by it is also collaborating and incorporating new ideas and concepts (Piirto, 2011). Teachers have important role in fostering every students development of creativity, ensuring that when teaching creativity each student has the capacity to develop interests and talents rather than simply 'delivering' the curriculum in a imaginative way. The Arts in the Australian Curriculum plays a key role in education, each art form have close relationships and often used in interrelated ways, each involving different approaches and practices to enable critical and creative thinking that inspire and enrich students learning (ACARA, 2013). Through the arts students can gain a wide range of knowledge and skills which aid in developing them into global citizens. The arts can provide students with learning of contemporary cultures and communities, locally, nationally and globally (ACARA, 2013). Often some students, teachers and parents see the arts as an optional extra, but I see it as an essential part of the educational system. However, the federal government believes that their needs to be more focus on literacy and numeracy, and less emphasis on creative and critical thinking across all subject areas (Ricci, C, 2015 ). The Federal government released a report recommending that drama and dance and media arts should be subsumed into other curriculum areas and the content of music and visual arts should be reduced (Drama Australia, 2014). I totally disagree with this new report, I believe that the Arts needs to be enforced more in schools and connected to other curriculum areas, as the Arts provide learning for mathematics, reading, problem solving and critical thinking all these areas are the foundations of learning. Not only does the Art provide the foundation for learning, but it also improves students motivation, confidence and teamwork, as their able to express ideas to classmates and work corporately together (Ricci, C,2015). Every child needs the opportunity to learn through creativity and as stated by Gibson and Ewing (2011) the arts is one of the strongest tools in aiding students to gain a better understanding or core subjects areas and the cultures and community that are all around us today.
Through this course I have gained a wider knowledge of tools and skills to assist me in implementing creativity into the classroom environment. From the beginning of this course I was timid and uncomfortable with integrating the arts into the curriculum, but after undertaking this course those barriers have decreased and now I feel comfortable walking into a classroom and teaching my students the Arts. This portfolio will be a great resource throughout my teaching career.
