Cultural Purposes
The Australian Curriculum encourages the importance of intercultural understanding, teachers and schools need to connect with cultural groups and local communities, engaging with the performing arts and creative impulses from their origin history (ACARA, 2015). By connecting with local communities and cultural groups students are able to explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practices as well as their place and value within broader social, cultural, historical and political contexts(ACARA, 2015). Incorporating cultural groups into the classroom, is a great resource for teachers to integrate cross-cirrcular priorities as well as it gives opportunity for students to learn about the culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait through creative art forms.
According to Brown (2011) 'to belong as cultural citizens, children require opportunities for diverse cultural experiences that promote agency, decision-making and ownership through community- building activities that involve creative, imaginative, and critical processes, all of which arguably can be supported through the arts.'
Arts Institutions give the opportunity for students to engage with real life encounters through social interactions with generations, culture and the community. Students are abe to explore new ideas and concepts, gaining a wider range of knowledge and skills (Phillips, 2015)
