Visual Arts engages students learning, as it gives them a chance to explore and express ideas through practical skills and critical thinking. It gives students the opportunity to respond to social and cultural issues, encouraging imaginative and innovative thinking (ARARA, 2013).

My view and experiences:
Visual arts is a great way for 'kids to be kids', they're able to express their own beliefs and ideas through this creative process, whether its finger painting, sculpting or just drawing it gives the a chance to explore without being wrong. Having not being very experienced with visual art, makes me some what limited to the to teaching the art form, therefore, upon going into the teaching world I need to practice my visual art skills, to be able to be
comfortable enough to teach it to students. I believe that
when teaching visual art, its not about colouring in between
the lines, its about creating your own masterpiece and to take a risk and
think outside the box and not be wrong for doing it.
What do you think? Free form or colouring in the lines
Incorporating into the classroom
In the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (2013), it states that 'an education rich
in Arts maximises opportunities for learners to engage with innovative thinkers...such an education
is vital to students’ success...”. According to Nilson, C., Fetherston, C. M., McMurray, A., & Fetherston, T. (2013), our role as a teacher is to provide the opportunity for students to 'embrace the concept of aesthetic judgements by tacitly connecting learning to social and personal life, building their thinking dispositions and developing cognitive capacity'. As a teacher we are to encourage more independent vision, for students express themselves. We need to provide activities that are educational and fun as well as giving the chance for children to reflect on what they have creative. Unfortunately I was away for the week where we focused on visual art, however I came up with a few ideas to incorporating innovating thinking in visual art throughout the classroom.
I suggest creating a scribble book, where students are able to draw whatever they want in that book, for them to express their ideas and opinions. This book gives them a chance to self-express and that is what creativity is all about. The book could be used as an afternoon activity or a time saver, where if students are finished their able to use their books. Another activity is to create resources that can be used in the classroom, such as when learning about the environment students can used craft skills to create plants, grass and animals and also to talk about the cycles (water, life). These arts could be hung up and placed around the classroom for students to reflect upon.
